Session 1A: Grid Transformation
Funded in part by the Ontario Ministry of Energy’s Smart Grid Fund, Oakville Hydro and Survalent collaborated on a project to provide a self-healing network for Oakville’s service territory through Distribution Management System (DMS) applications. Oakville Hydro will provide an overview of implementing two DMS applications - Distribution State Estimation (DSE) and Fault Location, Isolation and Service Restoration (FLISR) with their existing SCADA and Outage Management System to create a fully integrated ADMS platform. By implementing these applications Oakville Hydro expects a reduction in their outage time, improvement in their reliability indices, and increased customer satisfaction. As part of this ongoing project, they will discuss how they collected the data required for the network model, which is typically one of the most challenging parts of deploying a DMS project and the lessons learned that would help another utility looking to implement their own DMS project. Oakville Hydro will also discuss how these applications fit on their Smart Grid roadmap and how they will integrate with the future applications and technologies including renewables and microgrids.
